This is the list of nominees for the "best of BIW year 1 show. We're cut it off at March 27th 2009 (technically that's slightly more than a year but its when we finished the week of our 52nd podcast so that's a good place to break it.

Podcast participants will pick 20 works from this list and open voting on the blog will pick 10 for a total of 30 to fill out "30 Best" a show on the KU sim. From that 30 the celebrity judges panel will select five for the "final five" show at Jack the Pelican Presents.

"It’s a layered collection of intersecting lines in various vibrant colors; you can choose one of four sets of colors by clicking it and choosing from a menu. The textures shift (I spotted texture movement, rotation, and changes of texture repeat), causing the lines and colors to interact in interesting ways; it gets a lot out of seven prims. The effect is not fully describable, and certainly impossible to capture in a still picture; you’ll just have to come to BiW to see it yourself. Big Bang


Black Pearl

From most positions, the Black Pearl is a collection of interlaced silver arcs. View the Pearl from the correct angle from any of four sides (imagine the sides of a cube, though the Pearl is round) and the reason for its name emerges. View it from the top for a different look at the Pearl; the bottom might yield yet another effect, but the floor gets in the way. Full appreciation of the Pearl will give your camera skills an excellent workout!


Radiations (Radiazioni)

Solkide’s last piece at Brooklyn is Watching, Black Pearl, played with arcs and the spaces between them. Radiazioni (Radiations) is a further examination of that theme, and also adds broad lines radiating from the center of the piece. The eye is led into the black negative space between the arcs.


Spitfire

Solkide may be moving into awkward ground here; enough representation to be not purely abstract or “hyperformal” (as Dancoyote would say), but not enough to offer a coherent story. I continue to enjoy Solkide work with form; I’m just a bit confused this time. But then, sometimes good art is confusing.


There is a Crazy World Outside

"Indeed this is a lovely work. Sometimes in new media it is easy to become distracted by what is possible rather than seeing mastery of the medium sitting quietly right in front of you. This work is beautifuly realized, and like Kolor Fall’s “between the waves”, manages to feel complete and self contained without shouting. The artist could of course make it spin or flash - which is so easy in SL that everyone is doing it. That they’ve chosen to give it stillness I think gives it more depth (considering the title). "From a distance the eight panels seem to form part of an abstract work, it is only when the camera is zoomed in very close that you can see it is made up of thousands of tiny photographs of a shirtless soldier pointing a gun. When zoomed out and the camera or avatar moves, an optical effect occurs (moiré), the effect is intentional. The panels are also individually scripted so they change colour when walked (or flown) into." (text quoted from the notecard)

Injustice

A gallows and pink balloons; a reaction to acts of prejudice, intolerance and injustice perpetrated by governments, religious groups and individuals towards homosexuals.

The piece was no less for the limited time and unusual building setting ( a lot of avatars dancing and doing sl crazy stuff not to mention naked people on the screen)"

Butterflysmasher (aka Alex Barrella) has had several of his works displayed at Brooklyn is Watching by other artists, albeit entirely without his knowledge as he rarely logs into SL these days. His work has also been incorporated into other work seen at BiW by Ichibot Nishi and Arahan Claveau and interacted with in clever and amusing ways by the likes of DanCoyote Antonelli. (In)Famous for his grotesque, disturbing and hilarious genital and scatological dioramas, Butterfly's work was always lovingly crafted with an obsessive attention to detail. He was a unique Second Life artist, subversive, uncompromising and hugely talented and his work deserves to be seen by a wider audience.

I am interested in the way the book format might be translated and transformed as an art form in virtual worlds. This piece is an exploration of how one might create and read 'pages'in a new kind of 'book'. It 'reminds us' of a book, evokes some memory of reading, paper, drawing on a page. Contrary to the discussion in the podcast the work is created entirely with pixels. It poses some of these sorts of questions: Does the drawer/printmaker aesthetic of the artist seep into the digital format? Is there a place for evoking the memory of the book, reading, sequence, page turning, story telling in virtual artwork? Does a virtual book belong in a library or a gallery? Is there a place for restraint and quiet and listening to the voice of the artist in a virtual world where big and bold, colourful, whirling, flashing, glowing and ever changing is the norm?

Object

Monet Destiny delivered a minimalistic metaphor for the simplistic illusion of 3D space delivered by the medium (see right side of the picture). A simple cube with a plywood texture in the standard size 0.5x0.5x0.5, this deceivingly simple-looking readymade confines to Andre Breton's excellent definition of being a "manufactured object(s) promoted to the dignity of objects of art through the choice of the artist". The artist, Monet Destiny, thus draws a line from impressionist painting (his name!) via the beginning of modern art to unveiling the illusionist nature of so-called virtual worlds, simply by placing a 'wooden' cube on the fake lawn of the Brooklyn-Is-Watching sim and, at the same time, makes clear that Beuys' famous statement "EVERY HUMAN BEING IS AN ARTIST" holds more than ever.

"Come Go With Me" is a dreamy, watery, meditative space gently animated with scripts and accompanied by a haunting sound. A meditation sit allows the avatar to watch the patterns as they slowly revolve. The Maze

An SLART Magazine pick of the week.

"The Maze" is meant to be a mysterious and slightly scarey build. The walls flow like a river, the floor moves underfoot, petunias blow around on the SL wind, and occasionally the elusive great white spirit emerges from the center. A haunting melody reverberates throughout. Viewers should be sure to notice how the textures glow from blue to green as they travel down the corridors to the center of The Maze, where a meditation cushion hovers at the spirit's source. This sculpture consist of simple prims textured with multiple textures, opaque and transparent. Both are animated with scripts. The point of the work is to enjoy the kaleidoscopic interactions between textures and the mood generated by the piece. The textures made from my real life digital drawings. The drawings are done like drawings in traditional media except that I use digital tools, including a software program called Corel Painter and a pressure-sensitive digitizing tablet and stylus. -Alizarin Goldflake

Night Light

SLART MAGAZINE, Pick of the week, September 1, 2008

The theme of Night Light is the visual magic of moonlight at the ocean's edge. A receding tide has left the seaweed glistening. Stars wink overhead. The avatar can float on a gently-moving water texture while using the camera to look at the fallen star above or the swaying seaweed below. A mythic white fish undulates deep within the ebb and flow. It is an SL extension of an RL digital drawing, born of the my lifetime love affair with the coast of Maine USA, where I find a lot of material while kayaking. The build incorporates textures, particles, sculpties, and a sound (all made by me) and scripts and an animation (made by others and modified by me). - Alizarin Goldflake

Parsimonious Offering

Parsimonious definition

Second Life Viewer version 1.22 or higher required.

"The name describes the sculpture on two levels, a trivial one and a deeper one. At the trivial level it is an exercise in how complex a piece of art you can make that is composed of a single prim. In terms of prims about as parsimonious as you can get :).

On a deeper level it explores the concept of giving, of generosity ( or conversely, stingyness). The sculpture argues that it does not matter how copious or generous the gift is, if it isn’t in a form that the recipient can receive then it becomes its antithesis.

The inverted part of the sculpt forms an envelope that both enfolds and connects the male and female figures into their own little world."

"Prims map wind strength to prim height. the whole thing maps 100 square meters of whatever sim it is in to 10 square meters starting at the location. The wind direction and strength is also visualized by mapping the wind vector to the RGB colour vector. ie each 1 meter square shows the SL wind at the center of a 10 meter square at the relevant sim position."

"Its a little walled garden with a sign in the front that leads you into a space where various objects are assembled. Several of them a quite interesting. They start to grow when you approach and then start to rain down color on the garden and I can’t explain why but i’m really charmed by this- it makes this garden and the things in it belong to a special place where it rains whenever you’re there, and it rains color which engages my imagination in a way that i find quite delightful… I just love it and i want to spend more time looking at all the things in here to try to understand why they wound up in this garden (metaphorically speaking). Site specific installation, I have no idea whether this was the title, but it's discussed in podcast 22.

I am thoroughly glad to see Rezago remembered here. But he seems to have vanished from SL; if he were to win he might pop out of the woodwork, but I doubt it.

Rezago did have to leave SL for a while, but rumor has it that he's coming back soon. I hope so - he has had a big influence on me and a lot of other artists trying to find their way to artmaking here in this world - O.O

I second that- Rezago generously gave his time and knowledge to so many of us. His weekly classes were one of the highlights for me and many and a way of inspiring us to use the tools and simple scripts to create artworks.- Juanita D

BFA after Durer

The Ern Malley artist statement:

“He was a poet of tremendous power, working through a disciplined and restrained kind of statement into the deepest wells of human experience.”

This is how Max Harris responded to the discovery of the Ern Malley poems in 1940s Australia. Harris, an avant garde poet and critic, had started a modernist magazine called Angry Penguins. He published and lauded the poetry in his magazine, thus sealing his fate.

Unfortunately for Harris, Ern Malley didn't exist. He was a hoax dreamed up by some fellows who believed the modernists had lost the ability to differentiate good art from bad. The poems were a mashup of purple prose, poor imagery, cutup and cliche. The ensuing kerfuffle made international headlines and the courts. If you're going to produce shit as art you best have a good reason to do so. Fun is a good enough reason methinks :P So when I set out to play a light-hearted game with the Brooklyn is Watching crew, Ern was the obvious jumping off point. An obvious art hoax for anyone who cared to google the name. Thus I set out to make some crap art..... little did I realize....

Brooklyn is Watching was going through a "big fuckin ant" period - where a sculpted ant freebie had turned up in the sim. Folk were tinkering with it to recontextualize the work. To be honest a lot of it left me cold... many of the works were all punchline and not much else. (More elaborate works arrived later). So I figured I'd start with that.... if you call a recontextualized ant art then that's already established.

The first poem of Ern Malley's Darkening eliptic sequence was called was called Durer: Innsbruck, 1495. It was both about a painting, and the art process. Particularly about being unoriginal. Why not, I thought, combine a big fuckin ant and a classical painting - by stealing the form of the latter and applying the shapes of the former perhaps it would take on an arty look.

Unfortunately for my original intention, it did, and started to grow. Like Max Harris I was being fooled into seeing something that wasn't there... or was it? So I started doing some soul searching about why I was attracted to Ern Malley in the first place.

James McAuley and Harold Stewart, Ern Malleys creators, had become dissatisfied with the later modernism of Harris's generation. They liked the old stuff and felt the slide into proto post-modernism was a dissolution of ideal and objective values.

I tended to agree with them, having taught post modernism myself. It seemed, for all it's useful critical tools and insights, to have a subjective impotence at it's heart. A practical manifestation of this postmodern problem is political correctness - great in principle but often wishy washy in practice. Early modernism showed a similar idealistic zeal to the driving force of the enlightenment era. A belief in the objective good rather than the impotent endless subjectivity and doublespeak of post-modern thought (or the tautology laden post-structural view).

So how does post-modernism see Malley?

McKenzie Wark: The postmodern is a particular kind of aesthetic that happens, again and again, when one feels the cool texture of the dark underside of the page, rather than being caught like a bunny in the headlights of whatever is momentarily manifest on the surface of the text. It’s where Ern Malley ceases to be an either/ or figure, and becomes an and-also one. Not either a hoax or a genius, but necessarily both, allied and connected to both modern affirmation and its negation.

Post modernism likes it both ways :P Insightful but not particularly helpful. I was looking for a more solid reason for liking the work. Something more passionate. Did I, like Malley's creators, outsmart myself? Art critic Robert Hughes had a more satisfying explanation:

"The basic case made by Ern's defenders was that his creation proved the validity of surrealist procedures: that in letting down their guard, opening themselves to free association and chance, McAuley and Stewart had reached inspiration by the side-door of parody; and though this can't be argued on behalf of all the poems, some of which are partly or wholly gibberish, it contains a ponderable truth... The energy of invention that McAuley and Stewart brought to their concoction of Ern Malley created an icon of literary value, and that is why he continues to haunt our culture."

Having mis-spent my youth following the punk tradition, I'd often fallen back to cutup techniques and the cultivation of randomness in the creative process. This is not a theoretically post-modern practice but a practical one. One can't imagine they have control over every aspect and consideration of a work, so in releasing that control, something unimaginable can then manifest. One can foster a work one could never produce through intent; for no intent can create the universe, yet the universe is available to us for our observation. It is a process of opening up a work to let externalities in. Chance can be a tool for inspiration rather than dissolution.

This allowed me to clarify what I was trying to achieve and finish the work. So this work can be seen from several perspectives:

From the front it presents the original Durer painting with ant parts inlaid to create an insectoid Innsbruck. This cutup reflects the process of producing the Malley poems, which themselves quoted from many sources, one of which was a book on insect populations in marshland. Both Malley and "big fuckin ant art" are deliberately lowbrow forms, but in borrowing a classical art piece as a foundation they appear more refined.

From the back "the mind repeats - in it's ignorance the vision of others". The Malley poem is juxtaposed with the forms borrowed from the painting of the poems subject. The poem itself is about the process of this borrowing.

The third aspect is the repeating of the forms of Innsbruck town on the ground. It is a shadow inverted, light rather than dark. The universe is contained in it (via a starmap texture - my own tribute to overblown poetic devices). It is also a reflection of the reflection of the town on the water in the original painting on the other side. It suggests light leaking out of the canvass.

This reflection represents the leakage of meaning out of it's original context. Durers painting, re contextualized though Ern's poem, then carried through and reflected onto the universe of literary history, art history and popular culture. The funhouse mirror of reflected meaning carries on into one's own personal interpretation.

So in setting out to trick the Brooklyn is Watching critics, I ended up tricking myself instead. The joke has evolved into a satisfying piece (if only for me :P). If I've been post-modern in the way I've gone about it, well so be it.

Intellectual Property Garden

I liked this piece for two reasons. First because of the craftsmanship of the piece - it's made of an intricately shaped Sculptey (in Blender??) and also the delicate "©" particles are impressive. Secondly is the concept-it's new media work without directly commenting on new media itself. Rather it focuses on Commodification (that old chestnut!) - with "©" particles pointing to a very Adbusters sentimentality. This kind of subject matter is usually kind of grating to me but in this case it's surprisingly affecting, Probably because I wouldn't expect to see this subject matter being explored in Second Life. The late 90's subject matter, combined with the elbow-grease implicit in making the piece, makes the piece seem like a classic sculpture, keeping it old-rave on the otherwise mostly nu-rave sim. Of course, it also calls into question the notion of copytheft and Open Source, so it's also rooted in the right now.

Sowa Mai's Ghost Story is a multimedia narrative featuring full immersion observation. Using a basic story unique to a virtual world Sowa has created a walkthrough corridor with chambers relating to the text. The story, the rooms, and the technology are all unique to Second Life and a virtual existence.

The emotional impact is indicative of metaverse experience. Unsuspecting puppetmasters find themselves quickly caught up in the story and are soon inhabiting the avatar in a way that could not have been expected or forewarned.

Maximist and excessive, and pure high camp, this collaborative snow globe was meant to be shaken and not stirred! I missed my chance to Advance Beyond Human! Let’s bring it back! Aside from the fact that it is without a doubt the coolest snow globe, EVAH (by the mere fact that you can walk through it), it also exists as an artistic exercise in baseness and guilty pleasures, while also questioning and depicting the guilt mechanisms for having such pleasures in society. The piece also speaks to the trend of unabashedly appropriating and creating whatever, whenever, via the freedoms of technology in contemporary remix culture. I am a huge fan of the filmmaker and artist John Waters, and the piece operates like his best films. The work is pukey, zany, hilarious, naughty, and celebrates the strangeness of suburbia while also acknowledging its sad and horrible chains. Furthermore, the artists even give you a living room area to sit and contemplate the politics of beauty and the politics of “who” has the power to name beauty; to question the politics of personal taste and aesthetics, to question ourselves, and the crazy world we live in. Isn’t that what art should do?

Things to check-out in the globe: Rainbows, crosses with food offering shrine, quintessential poster art, living room couch area, psychotic pink bunnies and flowers, money signs, a Slither-esque-blobby-monster grotesque form pile, heart shaped snowflakes, rose petal rain, strange flies with drippy mouths.

From the BiW/Jack the Pelican show description: The Odd Ball – their performance art dance party – is a staple of the art and neophile crowd in Second Life. Dancing amid a psychedelic cloud of images, a typical crowd of 100 a night comes to see the show twice a week or more. The parties are known as a salon, where politics, philosophy, and perception are not unusual topics. However, they are best known as the most powerful virtual high in Second Life. Typical attendees report that they are “stoned” or “tripping,” “ecstatic” and “transported.” It’s common fare for a new person to be brought to the show unaware of the reputation, so that the effect is not primed. The following is nearly cultish.

To see the show, come to an Odd Ball at 11am SLT on Sundays or 7pm SLT on Mondays. As an immersive live experience, video and stills just do not capture the effect.

Selavy Oh put a cube under the water at BIW that sucked avatars over to it and wouldn't let them go. This piece is one of the ones that I talk about when i want something fast to get people to realize the potential of art in SL.


Blue Curtain

This blue curtain was absolutely amazing and beautiful- changed color with the wind on the sim.


Chain

A Chain of white frames that went up into the sky ultimately hanging from nothing- if you ran into this it would swing back and forth- every now and then it would break and fall apart (because of a bug in the SL software) and then it would reassemble it self. This is simple, brilliant, elegant - it works metaphorically and its fun to play with.

Face Melting Performance

Selavy Oh made her face melt.


Forbidden Space

Incomplete Cube

Sometimes there is work at Brooklyn Is Watching, which is continuously overlooked. And sometimes there is work which appears to be a litmus test of curiosity. Selavy placed nine small white cubes in front of the stage, and you could sit on each one of them without anything happening. Only if five avatars would sit at the same time, the nine white cubes would reveal their mystery: they suddenly would start to move, animate the avatars, transforming them avatars into a 'living' sculptures, forming the edges of a larger cube with their bodies. Eight cubes for the eight corners, one for the center, but eight avatars being never enough to make the cube complete, to provide all its twelve edges. A social sculpture? Or a complete failure, conceptually embedded in the work? Even though there was a notecard handed out to every avatar sitting on one of the cubes, even though the nine cubes were at BiW for three weeks, the "Incomplete Cube" was only activated once when Selavy spontaneously called a group of friends to help.

This twisted tower of flashing white blocks was exactly the height of the BIW overlay that used to cover the sim at about 200 meters. A little while after constructing itself, it begins to self-destruct from the bottom, scattering its parts to the winds. The cycle repeats every two minutes.

Gravitas

OK. This isn't the best title I ever thought up, but I like the piece anyway! It's basically an array of self-aiming shooters shooting balls toward a center point. At the center, the balls collide and fight each other making sparks and little explosions. I think of it as sort of a SL version of a cold fusion reactor, if that makes sense. - O.O


Path Monitor

The first in a series of artworks that create a record of avatars passing through or nearby. A 14x14 grid of rotating markers change height and colour when an avatar walks through them, marking his/her/its path. The avatar's name is displayed over each one in the same colour as the marker. The grid remembers each avatar and marks its passage with the same colour on every subsequent contact.

Four organically rendered kneeling soldiers (four corners of the earth?) face off at a squarely gridded crossroads, literally. Dekka Raymaker’s highly-complex, multi-media installation encircled the BIW tower with eight platforms for investigation, aptly titled: Propaganda Platform, Identity Platform, Resource Platform, Choice Platform, Immersed Platform, Idyll Platform, Creation Platform, and Reflect Platform. If there weren’t enough buzzwords on the platform list to pique curiosity, BIW blogger Shirley Marquez gave an excellent 4-part description, and documentation of the accomplished work (links above). The work also serves to historicize the brief history of SL and its hot/controversial topics, but from a personal perspective of artist as avatar. It is that level of reflexivity that I truly appreciate, coinciding with the intricate detail.

Adult Content–Age Verification

A scathing comment on Linden Labs' recently-added 'adult content' rules. It was a huge gate with electrified fence that scanned you and made sure you were allowed to visit all the 'adult' content of BiW.

I've enjoyed the way Dekka's work exists within the cultural reality of SL. It's truly SL art in that sense.

"Dekka’s piece shows a man hanging from a gallows, with a knocked-over portable staircase next to it. The man is Male Noob AFK by Art Laxness, a faithful reproduction in prims and textures of White T-shirt Guy, the most common male newbie avatar (or at least until a couple of months ago when LL introduced a bunch of new starter avatars). Around his neck is a sign saying Ageplayers, Ad-Framers, Land Barons, Vampires, Goreans, Furries, Forum Posters, Goths, Artists, all written in a stencil typeface; the first two are crossed out. (Those are two groups of people that LL has already acted against. Gamblers and Bankers might have also been included and crossed out, but are not listed.) Aeroport

A circular platform on the ground is a TP node to a platform in the sky. Before you TP up, though, you can get a free parachute, which should tell you something about the piece. Standing up on the platform, you hear a voice intoning “There’s a whole, there's a hole thing, in the sky, drop down though the hole in the thing.” A square hole is cut through the middle of the platform. When you fall through the hole, your parachute opens and you drift down through whatever is in the sky. At one point, Misprint had constructed a long glowy chute through which to fall. In the video below she is falling through one of Dancoyote's megaprim pieces.

Word Art-Words conjure worlds


The Big Bang

Shellina Winkler and Solkide Auer both placed works on the sim a week apart (apparently) with the big bang theme, Solkides' was called Big Bang. They often work together.


Freedom Bound

Little motion (and what motion exists is in an unexpected place at the top of the bars, rather than the seemingly dynamic form within), modest use of glow, and subdued colors. This time she is making a different statement, with the art and its title, about restriction of freedom. The form inside the bars looks like something that should be in motion; it’s a bit reminscent of the moving forms in the old video game, Qix. Perhaps the bars, by confining it to a small space, have prevented it from moving or taken away its will to move and change.


Luminescence

An immersive ambient divided into eight radial multicolor corridors. Every corridor takes to a colorful center. Tha avatar inside the work is wrapped by a constant flux of smooth changing of lights and colors.


Second Star to the Right

"Second Star to the right" has been created to be seen at night. It's the better setting to catch particles, colors and tranparences. Its title, more than the work, describes the trip I made upon it. Sitting on it, under a black sky , lighted up by rotating multicolor little sparkles I floated with it searching Neverland...


Psychedelic dream

The work is a huge sphere made of huge cylinders which are hugely orbiting the Popcha sim, accessible only at their very tippy tops, up at 1000 or so meters. They add context to everything in the sim, being interesting enough to look at in their own right, and also subtle enough to avoid detracting from other work going on. They also seem to have become a fixture on the sim.

Did Werner's giant steel sphere of megas make it under the one-year wire? Hmm. Talk about mixed metaphors. Because if it did, I want to see it nominated, and also reproduced in RL at Jack The Pelican Presents. If not, put it in the Next Year bin.

Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any photos of it.

No this is another next years piece, I am sure that none of Werner's work appeared at BiW until after podcast #52.

A chain of mountain ranges appears on the BIW horizon, but they cannot be reached by flying, teleporting, or any other normal means of transport. The mountains are in "the void" and made of several huge sculpted megaprims. If anyone has a link and the real name, please add them here.
